Small Businesses Think They’re Visible Online. The Data Tells a Different Story

Having a website, social media accounts, and a Google Business Profile doesn’t necessarily mean customers can find your business.

According to BrightLocal’s 2026 Small Business Marketing Report, which surveyed 1,002 U.S. small business owners, 84% feel confident customers can find them online.

But the research suggests that confidence doesn’t always align with consumer behavior.

Here are four findings every small business owner should consider.

1. Google Still Matters More Than Businesses Realize

BrightLocal found that:

  • 71% of consumers use Google or Google Maps at some point when searching for local businesses.
  • 61% begin their local business search using Google or Google Maps.
  • Only 22% of small business owners believe most of their customers come from Google.

That’s a significant disconnect.

The takeaway: Google Business Profile optimization, local SEO, accurate business listings, and a well-maintained website remain essential components of a local marketing strategy.

While emerging platforms deserve attention, businesses shouldn’t overlook the channels customers already use.

2. Online Reviews Can Make or Break First Impressions

Customer reviews continue to influence purchasing decisions.

BrightLocal reports that 47% of consumers won’t consider a business with fewer than 20 reviews.

Interestingly, 47% of small businesses surveyed also have fewer than 20 reviews.

That means many businesses may be falling short of customer expectations before a potential customer even visits their website.

The takeaway: Make requesting reviews part of your regular customer follow-up process. Respond to feedback, maintain accurate listings, and consistently build your online reputation.

3. Businesses Are Embracing AI Search

AI-powered search is becoming another consideration for businesses seeking online visibility.

According to BrightLocal, 54% of small businesses are confident they appear in AI search results and have checked their visibility.

However, appearing in AI-generated responses shouldn’t distract businesses from maintaining a strong digital foundation.

The takeaway: Focus on useful website content, consistent business information, trustworthy customer reviews, and a clear digital presence. These fundamentals support discoverability across traditional and emerging search experiences.

4. Small Business Marketing Remains a Challenge

Perhaps one of the most revealing findings concerns who’s responsible for marketing.

BrightLocal found that:

  • 98% of small business owners are primarily responsible for their marketing decisions.
  • 28% believe marketing is too technical to do more.
  • 25% question whether additional marketing efforts will make a meaningful difference.

For business owners balancing operations, customer service, finances, and growth, marketing can quickly become overwhelming.

The takeaway: Effective marketing doesn’t require being everywhere or doing everything. It requires understanding your customers, identifying the right channels, and measuring what works.

What Does This Mean for Your Business?

The biggest lesson from BrightLocal’s research is simple:

Online visibility shouldn’t be based on assumptions. It should be supported by data.

Small businesses should regularly evaluate:

  • Whether customers can easily find them through Google and other relevant platforms.
  • Whether their online reviews build confidence and credibility.
  • Whether their website answers customers’ questions and encourages action.
  • Whether their marketing efforts generate meaningful engagement, leads, and business opportunities.
